BSSENTIAL Balanced Salt Solution · 500 mL
A sterile, isotonic irrigating solution formulated to mirror the physiological composition of aqueous humour. Designed for precision irrigation during cataract surgery, anterior segment procedures, and vitreoretinal surgery — where fluid clarity and ionic balance are non-negotiable.
A six-electrolyte formula
matched to aqueous humour
Every ion in BSSENTIAL serves a biological role. Together they recreate the osmotic and ionic environment of the eye's natural fluid — protecting endothelial cells, maintaining tissue integrity, and supporting undisturbed surgical vision.

Engineering clarity
into every millilitre
From sterilization protocol to closure design, BSSENTIAL is engineered to support the surgeon at every step — from bottle connection to final aspiration.
Preservative-Free
Zero preservatives eliminates chemical endothelial stress. Safe for prolonged intraocular contact throughout the procedure without cytotoxic risk.
Single-Use Design
Dedicated to one patient, one procedure. Eliminates cross-contamination risk and ensures every surgery begins with a sterile, uncompromised solution.
Physiological Balance
pH ~7.5 and osmolality ~300 mOsm/Kg closely replicate aqueous humour, minimising cellular stress and supporting natural ocular homeostasis during irrigation.
Medical-Grade Polymer Bottle
500 mL container manufactured from medical-grade polymer, transparent for visual inspection, latex-free, and sterilized at 121°C for complete microbial assurance.
Dual-Port Closure
Secure two-port closure system supports both infusion line and venting needle connectivity — designed for dependable, leak-free handling in the operating theatre.
Visual Clarity Verification
Transparent bottle wall allows immediate visual inspection for particulates, discolouration, or clouding before use — an essential sterility check at the point of care.
Engineered to match
the eye's own chemistry
The aqueous humour is not simply water — it is a precisely balanced ionic solution. BSSENTIAL is formulated to approximate its key physicochemical parameters, supporting tissue integrity throughout irrigation.
Indicated across the full
ophthalmic surgical spectrum
BSSENTIAL supports irrigation during procedures where anterior or posterior segment exposure requires continuous, physiologically compatible fluid management for the duration of surgery (expected maximum: <60 minutes).
Phacoemulsification
Continuous anterior chamber irrigation during ultrasonic lens fragmentation. Maintains chamber depth, cools phaco tip, and protects the endothelium from mechanical and thermal stress.
ECCE / Manual Cataract Surgery
Extraocular and intraocular irrigation during extracapsular cataract extraction. Maintains the surgical field, supports anterior chamber stability, and aids cortex removal.
Anterior Vitrectomy
Anterior segment vitreous management requiring continuous infusion. Maintains positive pressure and clear surgical visibility during vitreous prolapse procedures.
Corneal Transplantation
Graft and recipient bed irrigation during penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and lamellar procedures. Maintains donor endothelial cell viability during preparation and placement.
Glaucoma Surgery
Irrigation during trabeculectomy, tube shunt implantation, and goniotomy procedures. Supports the anterior chamber during paracentesis and controlled fluid exchange.
Extraocular Surface Irrigation
Conjunctival lavage, corneal surface rinsing, and operative field washout. The isotonic formula prevents osmotic trauma to the ocular surface epithelium.
Important safety
information
BSSENTIAL is a surgical irrigating solution. Correct use, storage, and disposal are essential for patient safety and product efficacy.
Not for Injection or IV
BSSENTIAL is strictly for ophthalmic irrigation use. It must never be administered by injection or intravenous infusion. Do not confuse with parenteral fluids.
Pre-Use Inspection
Inspect the bottle before every use. Do not use if the solution is discoloured, contains particulates, the seal is broken, or the container shows any damage.
Single Patient Only
Contents must not be used for more than one patient. Discard any remaining solution after the procedure. Multiple-patient use risks infection and cross-contamination.
Storage: 2°–25°C
Store at controlled room temperature between 2°C and 25°C. Protect from freezing. Do not use a bottle that has been frozen or exposed to excessive heat.
Procedure Duration
BSSENTIAL is indicated for procedures with an expected intraocular perfusion duration of less than 60 minutes. For longer procedures, consider BSS-Plus class solutions with additional metabolic support.
Diabetic Patients
Use with caution in diabetic patients undergoing vitrectomy. Isotonic BSS-class solutions without glucose supplementation may contribute to intraoperative lens changes in this population.
